16 Oct

yellow-weddingThis week’s wedding inspiration is yellow sunshine!  Yellow is one of those colors that is so bright and cheery, I think it’s perfect for any wedding.  Depending on the shades you choose, it’s great for a Spring or Summer wedding, or you can choose sunflower shades for a Fall wedding.

Deeply Engraved Sandcarved Glassware

13 Oct

oct-jc-005For glassware and crystal items that are personalized with a very deep impression, look for products that say they are engraved with a sand carving process.  The Stationery Studio really is one of only a few websites which offers this process and we are confident that you will see and feel the quality which adds to the enjoyment of the products.  We also offer wonderful 3-letter monograms instead of what you might see elsewhere, which is often a single initial monogram.  Your glassware will be a truly personalized, deep etch sand carved product and you can see and feel the difference. Many of our glassware that is marked Deep Etched is created with equipment and special materials developed and manufactured specifically for our unique method.

oct-jc-002What exactly is our sand carving process? First, a photo mask is applied to the surface that’s being carved. Then, an abrasive, sand-like material (such as aluminum oxide) is propelled onto that surface.  Sand carving consists of blowing an abrasive at a surface using compressed air. Where the abrasive hits glass it roughens, or eventually erodes, the surface of the glass.   The abrasive carves the surface only in the open areas of the stencil, while the areas covered by the photo mask remains smooth and spotless.  As a result, the impression made in the glass, crystal or stone cleanly follows the pattern of the photo mask. When sand carving applied to glass, it can create beautiful three-dimensional images that appear to be suspended in mid air.

You may have heard of “etching” on glass or “engraving” on glass and that refers to a technique where the glass is simply roughened to produce a translucent “white” area on the surface.  Sandcarving is a process in which glass is actually carved away leaving a gorgeous deep imprint without damaging the integrity of the glass. Most others only “sandblast” the surface lightly to create the etched look but our carving methods provide a fabulous deep quality imprint.

The design is first rendered as a “line drawing”, with line weights (thicknesses) carefully selected to reflect the needs of the processes that follow.  The artist will generally use a computer in this process, to ensure that the lines have a consistent quality.  Most quality sandcarving is done using freehand line drawings, with the artist incorporating the limitations of the medium into the design, as it develops.  Once the design is complete, a mask must be constructed to prevent the abrasive from carving the glass in areas to be left “clear”.

Other websites only use either a chemical etch, or a very light sand carving process with hardly any depth, or heaven forbid a milky white silkscreen process to make customers believe that their glassware is “etched”.   Most other sand carvers utilize equipment that only allows them to do what would be considered “standard sandblasting”.   Our quality control methods for our elegant sandcarving create a look you will be proud of and a product that will stand the test of time.

Best wishes,
