Holiday Peppermint Bark (Recipe!)

8 Dec

We were recently asked if we’d like to be a part of a homemade holiday gifts segment for WGN-TV.  Carol Mackey showed viewers her homemade peppermint bark in our personalized gift boxes … the perfect gift for friends and family!

Carol was nice enough to share her recipe so we could share it with you.  Just in time for the holidays …

Peppermint Bark

Ingredients:
1 lb chopped bittersweet chocolate
peppermint extract
1 lb chopped white chocolate
crushed peppermint

Directions:
Line a 11×17 baking sheet with parchment paper or waxed paper. Melt bittersweet chocolate over a double boiler, stirring constantly. Stir in four drops peppermint oil or more to taste. Spread chocolate evenly onto the prepared cookie sheet. Chill until just set, about ½ hour. Melt white chocolate over double boiler, stirring constantly, if white chocolate seizes add a little canola oil. Quickly spread white chocolate mixture over chilled dark chocolate, spreading to the edge of the pan, sprinkle with peppermint. Chill until set. To cut, I trim the edges with a chef’s knife and then cut into squares and cut the squares into triangles.

I love how Carol tied off the boxes with red and white twine.  So festive and ready to gift!  Her homemade peppermint bark would make a great gift for teachers, friends, neighbors … anyone, really!  Of course, you can fill our boxes with any of your homemade goodies for the holidays.  I’ve even used them to give holiday treats for dogs (I love to bake homemade dog biscuits).

If you give homemade holiday treats, how do you gift them?  Share your creative ideas (and recipes!) with me in the comments below.

xoxo,

Jennifer

Movember or No-Shave November?

14 Nov

movemberv2

I feel inundated with images of men participating in “Movember” and “No-Shave November” no matter where I turn.  They’re on TV, twitter, Facebook … you name it!  I personally know men who grow their facial hair for hockey playoffs.  But I wanted to know more about “Movember” and “No-Shave November” and what do they really mean?  I did a little research online and found a great article about the difference between the two.

According to ABCNews.go.com, here’s an explanation of both:

What is Movember?

Movember began in Australia in 2003 to raise awareness for prostate and testicular cancers, according to the Movember Foundation, a nonprofit that raised nearly $21 million in 2013.

“We are all about the mustache and only the mustache,” said Movember’s U.S. Director Mark Hedstrom. “What we’re asking them to do is participate by changing their appearance. What that fosters is a conversation.”

From there, Hedstrom said men can explain why they’re growing a mustache and start talking about men’s health.

Now, it has campaigns in 21 countries, according to the organization. This year, the U.S. Movember campaign will also include men’s mental health and men’s fitness, Hedstrom said.

What is No-Shave November?

No-Shave November is a different organization that encourages people to donate what they would otherwise spend on hair grooming to the American Cancer Society.

Instead of being “all about the mustache” this group is a little more anything goes. Participants can grow mustaches and beards, but it also encourages women to maybe skip shaving their legs.

No-Shave November was founded on Facebook in 2009, but last year began a partnership with the American Cancer Society.

So I guess seeing men lumberjack worthy on Thanksgiving isn’t a sign of lazy grooming.  It’s merely a way to raise awareness of men’s health issues.  Once December hits, it’s time to get shaving again.  We just added our new Monogram Shaving Set that is perfect for the man in your life who appreciates an old fashioned and timeless shaving set.  Both gorgeous and practical, the Monogram Shaving Set makes a great holiday gift, too!

Happy Movember and No-Shave November!

Jennifer
